THE TECHNICAL SIDE OF A WELL DEVELOPED GYMNAST
Emma has been a national athlete since 2012 when she competed as a CPN/Aspire 1 and qualified to compete at Eastern Canadian Championships where she placed 4th overall. She then competed as a National Novice in 2013 and went to National Championships for the first time. Unfortunately a knee injury meant she could only compete on the bars, and she placed 10th in Canada. In 2014, Emma competed as a Novice once again and qualified for her second National Championships. This time, she competed all four events and placed 2nd on bars, 4th on beam, and 2nd overall for Canada.
Soon after, a severe hip injury took Emma out of the sport for nearly two years. After having surgery and then physical therapy for months, Emma was able to return to the sport in 2016-17 as JO9, and then the following year as a JO10 where she came 1st all around at International Gymnix, 2nd all around at Canadian National Championships, and helped team Ontario to place 1st.
This year, Emma competed at Canada Winter Games alongside her teammate Hannah and coach Chris. The team place 2nd overall and Emma finished 7th in the floor finals. Emma also competed this year at Elite Canada as a senior where she finished in 13th place all around, and 8th on bars and beam which lead her to compete in the bars and beam finals with the best seniors in Canada. This competition gained Emma High Performance status for this competition season. In March, Emma returned to compete at International Gymnix where she qualified to compete in the floor finals with girls from all around the world. Emma placed 5th in finals which she was very pleased with!
Emma will be competing at Canadian Nationals Championships this May in Ottawa as a Senior HP, where she "can’t wait to get out and compete with all of my friends again!"
Emma will be headed to San José State University in August 2019 on a full athletic scholarship. She is very excited to have the chance to be a part of such a welcoming team with the nicest coaches and teammates!
In the words of Emma: "Gymnastics has given me opportunities that I would never have had the chance to experience otherwise. I have been able to travel across the country to compete, travelled with my teammates who are like family to me, and met so many different people from around the world that I am still good friends with! Gymnastics has been such an influential part of my life and, with the help of my amazing coaches, has helped to shape me into the person I am today!"
